| A few words about the prices of used tape recorders |

Question: How much is my XXX tape recorder worth today? Answer: That's a very difficult question to answer. The value of a tape recorder depends mainly on two factors: 1. How sought-after is the device? The principle of supply and demand also plays a key role in determining the achievable (or payable) price in this case. Basically, it can be said that devices that already had a high original price are usually also more expensive when sold as used devices. The number of units sold also plays a major role. For example, a “Uher Variocord” is quite inexpensive to purchase because it was sold in large quantities over a long period of time and therefore many examples still exist today. The “Variocord” is a good example of a device that is (in my opinion) undervalued. Other tape recorders that perform less well in terms of sound quality are sometimes sold at much higher prices. 2. What is the condition like? Is the device operational? MeistensEven today, it is usually not a problem to find a replacement for an electronic component (transistor, capacitor, resistor, etc.). However, it becomes difficult when it comes to device-specific components (tone heads, mechanical and housing parts, etc.). Replacements from the manufacturer are now difficult or impossible to obtain. Then the only option left is to use a “battle tool,” which will hopefully still have the part you're looking for in working order. Not all manufacturers still supply (all) spare parts today. Is the device modified or in its original condition? Collectors (and it is precisely these people who are usually looking for tape recorders) can sometimes be quite pedantic (and when it comes to tape recorders, I am no exception). That is why a tape recorder should always be kept in its original condition as far as possible. A few additional holes in the front panel (for whatever purpose) or modifications to the connections are more likely to be disruptive and reduce the price. When reversing such modifications, the problem of parts no longer being available often arises (see above). |
