The Royal 784, royal but still without “luxury”
The precursor to “Royal de luxe” |

The Royal 784 was the predecessor of the Royal de luxe. It has almost all the features of its successor (4 tape speeds, 4 tone heads, slide pilot, etc.), but is somewhat simpler in terms of mechanics.
But that doesn't always have to be a disadvantage; at least the fast-forward and rewind functions still work perfectly on this “784” after all these years.
The same cannot necessarily be said of many “royal de luxe” models.
Presumed years of construction: mid to late 1960s.
A rather interesting and practical detail are the sockets for the inputs and outputs located on the side. The unit mounted above the sound head cover is not standard equipment. In the past, you could buy something like this as an accessory. Felt rolls were attached to the pins, soaked in alcohol, and then the tape was run through at high speed to clean it. |
