Question: Can I play back a tape recorded with a 2-track device on a 4-track device? Answer: Yes. However, since the lower head gap only covers part of the second half track, one channel will be slightly quieter than the other. This can generally be compensated for with the balance control. More details on the track positions for 2 and 4 tracks can be found in the following image. |

Question: Can I play back a tape recorded with a 4-track device on a 2-track device? Answer: To put it in the style of Radio Yerevan: In principle, yes. However, it won't sound very good. Since the head gap of the 2-track head also covers tracks 2 and 4 of the 4-track recording, these tracks (recorded in the opposite direction of the tape) can be heard backwards, mixed with the normally running tracks 1 and 3.
