This device was offered in an eBay auction as “for hobbyists,” “attic find,” and “defective”. I actually bought it as a spare parts warehouse for another 4000DS, but it's really too good for that.
After dismantling it, a picture emerged that you rarely see in a device that is at least 20 years old (cobwebs, tape abrasion, and greasy rubber residue from the belts are still the more harmless things I have found in tape recorders).
That is why a few pictures of the “innards” are also included below (as an exception).
After the “standard treatment” (demagnetizing and cleaning the tone heads and tape guide parts, applying some contact spray to the controls and switches), it was almost as functional as when it was new.
Only the belt for the counting mechanism had to be replaced, as it had become brittle over time.
There are still two small “flaws” in the veneer, but a solution will be found for these too.
